Eggs: the float test
Want to see if your uncracked eggs are good to use in the special recipe you'll cook tomorrow night?
Fill a glass with tap water: if the egg floats, throw it away. If it sinks: it's good, you can use it!
Why do bad eggs float?
When they start to rotten due to bacterial activity and the consequent decay of the egg, hydrogen sulfide gas is produced (smelly) as well as other gases. These gases have lower density than water, which basically means they are lighter than water, and the egg floats.
